I’m cat-sitting a senior kitty this week, and I absolutely love the way she responds when I give her Reiki. As soon as I start, she bows her head slightly in this really reverential way, like she’s praying or getting centered. She becomes super still and just gently receives, like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
A couple of years ago I went upstate to a horseback riding school to give Reiki to some of the horses. Within the first couple minutes of giving Reiki a few feet away from the first horse, he completely moved his body around so his back hip and leg were directly in line with and then smack up against my hands. A little while later someone at the school told me that horse had been having issues with his back leg.
When we first adopted our rescue kitty Calla a few months ago, she wasn’t crazy about her paws being touched. She was completely physically healed from having injuries to all four feet months before she came to our home, but of course I understood and respected her wishes. In the first few days with her, I gave her Reiki to help her assimilate to her new home and feel the love. As soon as I started the session, she placed her paw gently but firmly on my hand. She could have rubbed her face on me—that’s her go-to—but she chose to deliberately connect her paw to “mine."
Last night I read this in The Heart’s Code by Paul Pearsall, Ph.D: “…psychological, spiritual, and physical well-being is less a matter of personal self-fulfillment than being in energetic balance with all of the hearts and energy around you.” The rational brain often thinks we need to do certain things to feel fulfilled (buy that dream home, climb the corporate ladder, get thousands of likes on social media), but what if the key were as easy as connecting to the energy of universal love and support in us and around us?
Animals recognize that energy right away, they know it supports them, know they’re worthy of it and know how to receive it. And they’re leagues ahead of us at mastering unconditional love…so maybe there’s a connection?
[Note: MINOR Star Wars spoiler here:] Being a huge Star Wars fan, I was overjoyed to see that Reiki played a role in the latest film, The Rise of Skywalker. That’s right, Reiki helped heal the galaxy.
Imagine what our galaxy would be like if everyone connected to energy like our animals? I’m so glad they’re the Jedi masters showing us how it’s done.
