Making Miracles

The other day I woke up completely wiped out. It’s not that unusual for me—I often have sleep issues, coupled with the high-volume random fireworks that have been going off into the night here in Brooklyn. I’m able to rally eventually, but this particular morning I didn’t move and couldn’t imagine how I was going to get up. Then our rescue cat Calla jumped on the bed full of energy and started to play. (There’s always a cat toy on the bed somewhere.) In full goofy mode, she grabbed her toy, rolled right off the bed, landed on her feet, and continued to race around full speed.

It made me laugh out loud, and I suddenly felt a surge of energy. I got up immediately and thought, wow I feel so much better…this is a miracle!

I have a vivid memory of being a kid in Sunday school and asking the teacher why miracles don’t happen anymore like they did in the Bible. My teacher replied that they for sure still happened, but I remember remaining completely unconvinced.

But after my change in energy the other morning, I started to think about all the miracles I’ve experienced in the past few years.

Long before I studied Reiki, I received a Reiki session that completely took my chronic back pain away. I felt like I was floating afterwards and couldn’t believe the pain had disappeared.

Recently I did a reading for a client’s cat where a dog’s energy unexpectedly popped in. (It was like a photo bomb, except in a reading.) It turned out to be a dog the client had in the past, and he had a very healing message for my client. I never imagined that could happen in a reading.

In the category of “everyday miracles,” I remember riding the Q subway after seeing a Reiki client before the shutdown, feeling grateful for what I get to do for a living. Part of the train ride goes above ground, at which point I looked out the window to see the most stunning pink and orange sunset lighting up the East River, the Statue of Liberty gleaming. I was in the exact right spot at the right time to take in one of the most beautiful things I’d ever seen. I never thought that spot would be the subway.

It feels like certain things definitely open the door for miracles to happen. Like when we connect to other people and animals with open hearts, honor ourselves by receiving Reiki or doing what we love, take a moment to recognize the beauty around us and be grateful.

There’s a lot of darkness in the world today, but I know the miracles are coming. We just need to do our part. Thankfully, our part feels really good. ❤️
